Why Press Release Announcements For Music?

I understand the press release is just a gimmick to get people interested in whatever you have that you are selling. I do find press release announcements for music slightly annoying. I think that if an artist is going to go on tour or release a new CD that they should just come out and say so. Why should they try and build excitement for it when they should just come out and say it. I think people would be just as excited to hear the news, then wait for the news. Maybe this is only my opinion and others feel differently.
